Jesus' life created a movement of disciple-makers, and Jesus' strategy was multiplication. The ripple effect of His disciples' lives continues to transform our world. Jesus' strategy was more than addition; it was multiplication. We call that the ripple effect. Our God Dream is to stir up a storm of disciple-makers whose impact will ripple across our entire community and the world. We feel that one way that is done best is through D-groups.

D-Groups are a small group of people committed to reading the Bible and intentionally walking with one another to trust and follow Jesus in obedience.

disciple is someone who lives and loves like Jesus. Our hope is to see each believer in our church body be a disciple-maker. That is someone who teaches and holds others accountable to hear what God is saying, obeying what he says and sharing what he says with others.

The Bible points us to this multiplication-mindset (Matt. 28:18-20, Mark 1:17, 2 Tim. 2:2) throughout its story. Our goal is to see the Word of God as the central piece and spiritual discipline to foster a disciple-making culture here at First McKinney.

The following resources are here to help you as a disciple-maker walk with your Discipleship Group (D-Group) as each of you becomes more like Christ and then launches out to teach others how to make disciples. Followers of Jesus are disciples, and disciples are disciple-makers.

In the video below, hear Pastor’s Sam heart for Discipleship.
  • WHO:  Group of 3-6 from your circle of influence
  • WHEN:  Weekly for at least 66 days*

*why 66 days?? Research shows it takes 66 days to form a habit, and once established, some may be ready to launch!

  • WHERE:  Anywhere! (home, church building, restaurant, etc.)
  • WHAT:
    •   Read & Pray Daily (reading plan)**
    •   Gather Weekly (90-minutes)
    •   Mission Monthly (lead & serve)
    •   Launch Annually (66+ days for multiplication)
      **Curriculum = The Bible
  • HOW:  Look Back/Look Up/Look Forward + S.O.S.

In your daily reading plan, pick out a specific verse, or a point in the passage that the Spirit caused to stand out to you, write the verse in your own words, and then walk through the following questions…

  • Say –God, what are you saying to me? (verse in your own words)
  • Obey –How do You want me to obey? (specific action step)
  • Share –Who do You want me to share this with? (circle of influence)

Example: Luke 6:9-10

And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” And after looking around at them all he said to him, ”Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored.
SAY – Don’t overcomplicate the love and acts of Jesus in and through your life. If the opportunity is there to show love, then do it! You don’t have to wait for the most opportune time, nor worry about it. Simply love Jesus and be obedient to who and what he has called you to.
OBEY – Reach out to my next-door neighbor and invite their family over for dinner.
SHARE – with my wife and neighbor.

Look Back/Look Up/Look Forward

During your weekly time together, you can divide up your time with the following structure…

  • 1st Third: Look Back
    • Pray together
    • Check in: How are you doing? (blessings, celebrations, struggles, confession)
    • What happened last week when you obeyed?
  • 2nd Third: Look Up
    • Read that days reading together and discuss, “What is God saying to you/me/us?”
  • 3rd Third: Look Forward
    • How can I/we Obey?
    • Who can I/we share this with?
    • Pray

  • Start with your “oikos” or circle of influence. See who the Holy Spirit leads you to and pray over the names. Make the ask, explain the commitment to the group & vision for multiplication, and get started!
  • Set a day & time and place and stick to it. Be committed but not overly rigid. Be creative and be you…Enjoy the adventure!
  • In your first meeting, consider the optional group covenant provided above. Spend time getting to know each other and sharing testimonies. Teach the S.O.S. method and cast vision to replicate.
