Becoming God's Trophy: Living Holy in an Unholy World
Adapted from: Live in Hope, Live in Holiness, Live in Fear by Justin Hornsby
Have you ever received a trophy that ended up collecting dust in a box somewhere? While earthly trophies may tarnish and lose their shine, God sees His children as precious trophies meant to reflect His glory. This powerful message from 1 Peter 1:13-21 shows us how to live as God's cherished possessions in a world that often pulls us in different directions.
Living with Eternal Hope
Peter calls believers to "set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 1:13). This isn't a partial hope mixed with worldly securities – it's an all-in commitment to trust in God's promises. Just as athletes prepare their bodies for competition, we're called to prepare our minds for action and stay alert to God's working in our lives.
Called to Holy Living
What does it mean to be holy? At its core, holiness means being set apart for God's purposes. Like fine china reserved for special occasions, Christians are called to live distinctively different lives that reflect God's character. This doesn't mean achieving perfection, but rather growing daily in Christlikeness through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Three Key Ways to Live as God's Trophy:
1. Live in Hope - Keep your mind focused on Christ's return and the grace He brings
2. Live in Holiness - Allow God's character to shape your conduct
3. Live in Reverent Fear - Remember that we will all stand before God one day
The Beautiful Exchange
Our ability to live holy lives comes from Christ's work, not our own efforts. We were ransomed "not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ" (1 Peter 1:18-19). Like a master craftsman restoring a tarnished trophy, God is in the business of reclaiming and renewing lives for His glory.
Practical Steps:
- Examine areas where worldly patterns have crept into your thinking
- Identify one specific way you can live "set apart" this week
- Spend time thanking God for ransoming you through Christ
- Ask the Holy Spirit to help you reflect God's character more clearly
Remember, God doesn't want our to-do lists – He wants our hearts. The question isn't "how much is enough?" but rather "am I becoming more like Jesus?" As we live in hope, pursue holiness, and maintain a healthy fear of the Lord, we become living trophies that display God's transforming grace to a watching world.
